What to Consider Before Dropping a Class


One of the most confusing and stressful things to think about as a college student is if you should drop a class. Whether it's because the class is not what you expected or you just don't like the way the professor teaches there's so much to consider - like is it even worth it? Click on the button below to see what you should be taking into consideration academically and how this can affect you financially (financial aid) before making that decision.



What impact dropping a class has on your FINANCIAL AID?

  • If you drop classes before classes start = get 100% tuition refund

  • Drop classes before September 1st = get 75% tuition refunded

    • LaGuardia is Sept 17th // KBCC doesn’t say (usually it’s within the first week of class)


  • ​Drop classes before September 8th = get 50% tuition refunded

    • LaGuardia is Sept 23rd // KBCC doesn’t say (usually it’s within the second week of class)


  • Drop classes before September 15th = get 25% tuition refunded

    • LaGuardia is Sept 28th // KBCC doesn’t say (usually it’s within the third week of class)


  • IF YOU DROP BELOW 12 CREDITS YOU LOSE ACCESS TO FULL TIME TAP FUNDS

​​How does dropping a class impact your GPA?

  • W or WD = does not impact GPA

    • “Official Withdraw” via CUNYfirst during withdrawal period

    • Until November 5 (but you don’t get money back!)


  • WN = does not impact GPA

    • Never attended the class + doesn’t officially withdraw


  • WU = does impact GPA

    • Attended one class, stopped and never officially withdrew

    • Counts as an F for GPA

    • Can retake and earn C or better to clear from GPA (but WU stays on transcript)


Tips:

  • Drop Early and Drop Officially

    • Always check CUNYfirst & make sure that if you drop a class, it’s reflected there

    • Confirm with Bursar that they saw you dropped your class, so you get your $$ back


  • Make all your Add/Drops at once - some campuses charge an add/drop fee

  • Remember - if you go under 12 credits, it affects your financial aid

  • To avoid losing financial aid, you can drop after 60% of the semester has passed. Talk to your counselor to learn more.
